Safe T Sleep FAQ

Q1 Do babies seem to like being wrapped in the Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap®?

Parents tell us that their babies seem to find it very cosy and comfortable and that their babies seem to sleep better, longer and more restfully.  There are hundreds of years of well documented evidence which show that babies usually like the feeling of security from being wrapped or swaddled.

The use of the Sleepwrap® still allows the shoulders, arms and legs to be free and the body has a lovely degree of natural flexible movement.

For young babies, often the cot is far too big in area but with the help of the Safe T Sleep™ and maybe a warm hot water bottle; you can make a lovely nesting sensation, which gives them a kind of cuddly feeling.  Older babies tend to do Safe T Sleep™ up themselves because they like the feeling so much.  In a nutshell it gives them a feeling of security, therefore a better sleep and consequently a better sleep for the entire family.

Safe T Sleep™ was invented as a loving, nurturing wrap for use during sleep and the few moments before and after sleep.  Good human supervision is the best supervision.

Q2 My baby turns around in the Safe T Sleep™ - what can I do?

Safe T Sleep™ was invented by a mother as a wrap not as a restraint, therefore if you wish to keep baby off the tummy you will need to adhere to the product instructions regarding trainer pants and good quality safety lock safety pins.

It is important to read the packaging instructions carefully.  If you no longer have this instruction sheet, please see the reverse of the Care Label sewn into the product, where you will see that you need to use a pair of firm fitting overpants over whatever your baby is wearing, then the Safe T Sleep™ and a good quality safety capped safety pin which will go through the pants and the STS.  Mothers tell us that the 100% cotton terry towelling trainer pants are best - they are inexpensive and you can use them at a later date for toilet training.  We are also told that the metal steel cap safety pins are the best.

Somewhere between 6-12 months, babies are at the developmental stage of experimenting with varied sleep positions.  Most parents now prefer to keep their sleeping baby off the tummy for at least the first 12 months (a good time to encourage tummy-time and rolling over is during supervised 'floor time'.)

WHETHER INSIDE A Safe T Sleep™ OR NOT, THIS DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE WOULD BE TAKING PLACE.

Remember, during this stage babies may still be at risk of creeping into awkward, cold or dangerous positions, and at risk of climbing and/or falling out of bed.  Human supervision is the best supervision, Safe T Sleep™ may aid your peace of mind in conjunction with regular supervision and parenting techniques.

There is also a school of thought that once a baby is strong enough to roll over, has a strong neck, is a healthy, normal baby, not on medication and not over-tired, they may be okay to sleep in their desired sleep position.  This needs to be your decision or, in conjunction with your preferred healthcare advisor.

If you decide that your child can sleep in his/her preferred sleep position, ensure that the STS wrap that goes around the mattress is REALLY TIGHT! This enables more flexible movement in the centrepiece for the baby.  Some mothers tell us that they can teach an older/stronger baby to turn within the wrap.

Q3 How does the 'One Size Fits All' Safe T Sleep™ actually work?

Safe T Sleep™ is fitted according to BED size.  The 'One Size Fits All' comes in TWO sections and fits everything from Bassinet, Cradle, Aircraft Cradle, Cot, Crib Standard Single Beds, Boat Squabs and some sofas.

Section A: Contains the special 'Baby Wrap'.
Section B: Is the 'Extension Wrap'.

For use on a bassinet cradle , aircraft cradle, some types of prams: Firmly wrap Section A over (and around) the covered mattress.  A newborn baby can be wrapped in a swaddling sheet/blanket and then the Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® wrapped around.

For use on a cot, crib or single bed: Join Sections A & B together by attaching the hard, widest fastening strips of Section B to the 3 longest, soft fastening strips of Section A.  The two Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® logo faces will be facing each other.   See detailed product instructions inside the product packaging.

Q4 How can Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® prevent and correct flat and misshapen heads?

Simply by varying a baby's head and/or body position at alternate sleeps.  When back sleeping, some babies respond to alternate head turning, but many revert back to a favourite spot during sleep.  Many flat and misshapen heads do not come right.

One of the many benefits of the Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® is that you can vary your baby's sleep position AND STILL KEEP BABY OFF THE TUMMY by placing baby on alternate sides at each sleep.  (Follow the Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® product instructions.) Many mothers have remedied existing flat and misshapen heads in this way.

WHEN NEEDING TO HELP CORRECT FLAT/MISSHAPEN HEADS

Depending on the age and stage of development of the baby, 2 rolled up towels and/or a tiny head wedge ( via STS NZ Office) may be needed.

It may also be helped to:

1. Fold a single sheet vertically in half.
2. Place the sheet underneath the mattress.
3. Bring one side of the sheet and tuck across the baby and tuck into the opposite side of the mattress.
4. Tuck the last side of the sheet into the side of mattress that baby is facing.

NB: For safety any props used in your baby's bed need to be anchored down with good quality safety lock safety pins or fabric clamps.  If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the Safe T Sleep (NZ) office.

Q5 How may the Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® assist with better sleep patterns?

Most babies have a one-way-no-reverse-gear creeping ability in the first 2-12 months of life and often end up with heads, legs or arms jammed into awkward and/or dangerous positions, some often ending up underneath bedding, or freezing cold without their covers still on.

As Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® will centralise the baby's position in the bed, these often dangerous or simply 'awkward' positions don't tend to happen and baby still has a comfortable degree of natural, flexible movement.  It is normal for most babies to wake once or twice during the night and often the cosy feeling of security that the flexible boundaries of Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® provides, is more likely to help them to naturally fall back to sleep again with a minimum of fuss.

When your baby sleeps better and longer and more restfully, the whole family receives more sleep also.

Q6 Why use Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® with over-9 month old babies, or why bother using Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® if babies can undo the Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® fastenings?

Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® is an AID to positive nurturing parenting skills and safe bed making practices.  In conjunction with good supervision, Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® helps prevent accidents, aids with more restful secure sleep, aids in transition from cot to bed and is more compact and light to travel with than anything else on the market.  The significant bonus is peace of mind and better sleep for everyone.

Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® was developed by a mother for her own children as a loving nurturing wrap to be used in conjunction with positive skilled nurturing parenting.  Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® in itself is a 'WRAP', not a restraint.  You cannot beat human supervision.  IT IS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR USE DURING SLEEP AND THE FEW MOMENTS BEFORE AND AFTER SLEEP.  Just as a car seat is designed for safe travelling and not leaving baby in the car while shopping, Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® is designed for safe sleeping to ensure your baby will not creep, climb, fall or get cold during sleep and the few minutes before and after sleep.

Therefore the very last thing after you have fed, winded, changed, sang, cuddled baby, the last thing to lovingly and snugly wrap around your loved, relaxed, sleepy (not necessarily asleep) baby, is the Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® Sleepwrap®.  You then tuck a large sheet and/or blanket right underneath sides and bottom of mattress.  (Enquire about Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® Booklet on tips for better, safer sleeping.)

In our experience a baby less than 9 months of age usually cannot consciously undo the fastening strips.  But, baby may, during sleep unconsciously pull the strips apart.  We suggest using a good quality Safety capped safety pin.  Also read Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® Product Instructions carefully for further assistance.

Remember, Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® is NOT intended as a restraint for a wide-awake tossing infant.  If you are experiencing sleep problems with your child, know that this is a common challenge with parenting and that there are many resources to assist you in the community.  We at Safe T Sleep (NZ) Ltd will help you where we can.

Q7 Is it possible to introduce Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® to a child over 12-18 months? And how long is it sensible to keep using it?

Yes Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® was originally designed for babies from 7 months to 2-3 years of age.  The Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® was invented by Miriam Rutherford, a mother with a nursing background for her own children.  Many people use the Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® with special needs children also.

We are told that Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® is fantastic on boats, where they used with or without a leighcloth and with children from newborn up to 7 years of age!

People like to introduce older babies to Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® for the following reasons:

To help keep blankets on.

Ease of travel.  Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® is the most practical, compact, economical alternative to a portable cot - literally a bed in a bag! - will fit around a single bed in most countries in the world, and takes up a lot less space than a portable cot.

Ease with transition from cot to bed.

More restful sleeping.

As Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® will centralise the baby's position in the bed (while still allowing a flexible natural degree of movement) these often dangerous or simply awkward positions don't tend to happen and babies sleep longer.  Then the whole family gets more sleep.  It is normal for most babies to wake once or twice during the night and often the cosy feeling of security that the flexible boundaries of the Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® provides seems to help them naturally fall back to sleep again with a minimum of fuss.

To help prevent cot/bed accidents most babies 2-12 months of age have only a one-way-no-reverse-gear creeping ability which often places them with heads, legs or arms jammed into awkward and/or dangerous positions.  Some often ending up underneath bedding or freezing cold without their covers still on.

To aid with positioning in various medical situations and/or recovery

To introduce Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® to an older child, simply use education through play, by using a favourite toy or teddy and explain how Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® will keep them safe and warm, showing how teddy loves Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® etc.

Remember to read product instructions carefully.

Q8 If I place my baby at the foot of the cot will this guarantee his/her safety?

In our experience working with many parents, babies have used this position to lever themselves sideways, often with fatal or near fatal results.  We would definately recommend the use of a Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® to prevent this happening.

Q9 Could the Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® pose any danger to baby?

Provided Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® is used according to the instructions, the wrap cannot put the baby at risk.  This has been established by trials which included many Child Health Professionals such as members of the, Karitane Family Units, NZRN Nurses (Community and Hospital), NZ Parent Centre, NZ Playcentre; Paediatricians, General Practitioners, Counsellors, Behavioural, Developmental, and Clinical Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Midwives, Ante and Post Natal Tutors, Occupational Therapists, Management of Maternity and Neonatal Services, Hospital Parent Care Support Groups for Premature and High Risk Infants Inc. and from the subsequent feedback from these trials.  Also from the feedback of 25% of the 7,500 units sold in the community during the first 18 months on the market and currently, from the 60,000 plus Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® products sold in the community, with nil reported deaths or injuries.  Recently 2002 fully accredited hospital clinical trials were completed.

Q10 Can a baby overheat with a Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® Sleepwrap®?

A Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® will not cause overheating.  Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® fabric has been scientifically tested at the University of Otago New Zealand.  The Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® fabric was tested against five other cottons.  Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® uses only the best, top quality, breathable cotton that is a specific weave and 100% homespun.  The testing shows a 'TOG' rating of 0.27, which breathes easily especially important for young babies in the high SIDS(Cot Death) risk period and for babies living in hot climates.  (Many young babies in Brisbane, Australia use Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap®).

Parenting in general is a combination of learned skills and good common sense.  With or without a Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® parents need to ensure that young babies are regularly supervised in a relaxed and consistent manner.

Q11 Can Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® prevent my baby from getting cold - kicking all the blankets off?

With a Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® most natural movement is possible for your baby during sleep, the Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® holds baby gently and safely in a central position in the cot.  It is important to tuck the large sheet or blanket (preferably a breathable tested blanket) well underneath the sides and foot of the mattress (Remember it is unsafe to use duvets with babies under 2 years of age, because duvets are usually lightweight and too easily kicked or pulled over babies face, they are synthetic and not breathable).  As the baby is held in the centre of the cot, they are less likely to push themselves up into corners or down into the bottom of the cot, pulling their blankets out and then waking up freezing cold.
